Driving in the snow
I'm not sure how to capture this experience. For anyone who has ever driven in the snow at night, you'll know the mesmerizing experience of snowflakes streaming toward your windshield from out of the black into your narrow cone of light. It's hard to keep focussed on the road while thousands of delicate white streaks fill your field of vision and trail off to either side, only to be replaced by countless more. Like travelling through a starfield in hyper-space or like drifting in currents of bio-luminescence in some distant sea. Sounds are muffled and the road feels soft and shifting under your wheels. Everything moves in slow motion and it feels like you've entered another world.

Hot Blues on a cold night
I went to listen to some very talented young blues musicians play on a snowy night in Maine. They are on their way to Memphis this week to represent our home state at the International Blues Challenge, an annual event that draws the best of the amateur Blues players. Last year, Jay and I were there with over 160 acts playing half hour sets in three nights of competition all up and down Beale Street. It will be quite an experience for Zack Parmaleau and his band and we wish them all the best!
