I remember the first time I saw "ice falls". I was 5 or 6 years old and I was in the car with my family on our way to Mount Tom in western Massachusetts where we learned to ski. Along the way, we passed a road cut that had these wonderful ice waterfalls shimmering with color. Someone (I guess it was local kids) had put dye in the water that seeped out of the rock face. It had dripped down and created layers of multi-colored ice in fantastic forms that thrilled my sister and me. It soon became the highlight of the car trip for us. These days, I still feel a rush of joy when I see ice falls. This one that I saw today, did not have the exuberance of colors (one would hope from natural, non-toxic dyes), but the little kid in me could not resist the impulse to stop and photograph these wonderful, natural ice sculptures.
